Eight people arrested in counter terror raids in Belgium

Eight people have been arrested in Belgium in a series of counter-terrorism raids across the country aimed at defeating possible terror attacks.

Five searches were carried out in Merksem, Borgerhout, Deurne, Sint-Jans-Molenbeek and Eupen and give people were arrested.

According to prosecutors, “At least two of the people involved are suspected of planning to carry out a terrorist attack in Belgium. The target of the attack has not yet been determined."

In Brussels, three people were arrested after searches in Zaventem, Sint-Jans-Molenbeek and Schaerbeek in a separate case.

The prosecutor's office said “These people are also suspected of planning to carry out a terrorist attack in Belgium.

“There are links between the two cases, but further investigation will have to reveal the extent to which the two cases were intertwined.”
