Woman arrested on terrorism charges in Canada on return from Syria

A woman has been arrested in Canada upon returning from five years in detention by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Syria.

Oumaima Chouay was arrested on arrival at the Montreal Trudeau airport and charged with four terrorism-related offences including "participation in activity of a terrorist group" - the group in question being ISIS.

Chouay left Canada in 2014 and was arrested by the SDF in November 2017.

Another woman, Kimberly Polman, was also arrested upon her return to Montreal, though is not facing criminal charges.

Prime minister Justin Trudeau said: “It is important that we make sure that people know you cannot get away with supporting terrorism in this country, regardless of the circumstances.”
