New IRA claims responsibility for police officer shooting

The New IRA has admitted responsibility for shooting Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell in Omagh on Wednesday.

A typed statement appeared in Londonderry on Sunday night.

The officer was shot several times after coaching a football session for young people. He remains in hospital.

Six people are currently in police custody.

On the statement, Assistant Chief Constable Mark McEwan said: "We are currently reviewing its contents as part of the overall investigation."

"On Friday we confirmed that we were treating the attempted murder of DCI John Caldwell as terrorist-related and our primary line of enquiry was the New IRA."

A rally was held in Omagh, on Saturday to show support. There was also a solidarity walk in the village of Beragh.
