Nigerian government considers banning motorcycles to fight terrorism

The Federal Government of Nigeria is considering banning the use of motorcycles and mining activities to cut off sources of funds used by terrorists and bandits.

After a meeting of the National Security Council presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, told reporters the news.

He said that terrorists had moved on from conventional ways of funding their activities to mining and ransom taking and the government needed to act.

Malami continued to say that motorcycles are used by bandits to travel and mining provides funds for their arms supply.

He said that current legislation is focussed on conventional means of funding to terrorists and the government was looking at ways of addressing new sources of funding.

Speaking on the implications of the proposed ban on the lives of ordinary Nigerians and the economy, he said that national and public interests would be placed above individual interests.
