CT Policing responds to Protect Duty announcement

Counter Terror Policing has responded to the government's announcement on Protect Duty, which will now be known as Martyn's Law.

The law will mean that venues must take steps to improve public safety, with measures depending on the size of the venue and the activity taking place.

The legislation has been developed following public consultation and engagement across industry, charities, local authorities, security experts and with survivors.

Counter Terrorism Policing’s acting senior national coordinator for Protect and Prepare Helen Millichap said: "We would like to recognise the efforts of those individuals whose very personal experiences have inspired and shaped the duty, contributing directly to the powerful benefits it will bring.“Counter Terrorism Policing have long been strong advocates for the Protect Duty and we welcome the announcement made by the government today, which outlines clear proposals for Martyn’s Law.

“Introducing a legislative framework for the provision of protective security has the potential to transform how the UK keeps its communities safe in the face of the enduring terrorist threat.

“Our national CTP network will now look to work alongside our partners to ensure those with a share in this legislative responsibility can deliver to the greatest effect.

“We would also like to recognise the efforts of those individuals whose very personal experiences have inspired and shaped the duty, contributing directly to the powerful benefits it will bring.”
