Islam ‘not the source of terrorism’, says Merkel

Speaking at the annual Munich Security Conference, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said that Islam is ‘not the source of terrorism’. Merkel, who has been publicly critical of the proposed US travel ban on seven predominantly Muslim countries, passionately stated that European countries could not fight Islamic terrorism alone and instead urged other predominantly-Muslim countries to ‘give a contribution’ to the fight. The German Chancellor also urged Islamic religious authorities to proclaim ‘clear words on the demarcation of peaceful Islam and terrorism in the name of Islam’ in an attempt to highlight the terrorist threat is from a ‘falsely understood Islam’.
