Jury to consider death penalty for NYC bike path attacker

The Jury in the trial of the New York bike path attack are to decide if the attack should face the death penalty.

Sayfullo Saipov killed eight people when he drove a truck at high speed down a path along the Hudson River on Halloween 2017. He was convicted last month.

The jury decision must be unanimous for the death penalty, otherwise he will spend life in prison. New York State does not have capital punishment and no one has been executed there since 1963. However Saipov’s trial is in federal court, where a death sentence is still an option. The last time a person was executed for a federal crime in New York was in 1954.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Amanda Houle said that Saipov smiled when he described his attack to investigators. She said: “He had no remorse then. And the evidence will show he has continued to have no remorse.”
