Man arrested at Luton Airport on suspicion of terrorism offences

A man has been arrested at Luton airport on suspicion of being a member of a proscribed organisation.

Officers from the Met's Counter Terrorism Command arrested the man in his 30s after he arrived into the UK on Tuesday.

He was initially stopped and spoken to by officers under schedule 7 of the Terrorism Act (TACT), 2000. He was arrested on suspicion of being a member of a proscribed organisation, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) - contrary to section 11, TACT, 2000 and on suspicion of supporting a proscribed organisation, contrary to section 12, TACT, 2000.

The man was released under investigation after being taken to a local police station. The investigation is being led by the Met's Counter Terrorism Command, with support from colleagues in the Eastern Region Special Operations Unit.

Head of the Met's Counter Terrorism Command Commander Richard Smith said: "Across the UK, there is a network of counter terrorism officers working at our ports and borders. Officers work closely with colleagues from the UK Border Force and other partners to help keep the public safe from any potential terrorist threats. "The support of the public is also vital and as the terrorist threat level remains at substantial, I would ask the public to continue to be vigilant and if you see or hear anything that doesn't look right, then please report it to us."
