Melbourne terror suspect shot dead

Australian authorities have confirmed that a man who stabbed three people in the Australian city of Melbourne has died in hospital after being shot by police. The attack is being treated as terror-related after the suspect, who remains unnamed, set a car on fire and stabbed three people, killing one civilian. The attacker, who police say was known and of Somalian origin, was shot after confronting officers on a busy city street before being taken into custody in a critical condition. The man was taken to hospital and died half an hour after he arrived. Graham Ashton, Victoria Police Chief Commissioner, said that, while the police do not believe that there is an ongoing threat, nor that they would be looking for anyone further at this early stage, they would certainly be ‘treating it as a terrorism incident’. James Gargasoulas is currently on trial for a 2017 attack on the same street which left six people dead after he deliberately drove his car into pedestrians, hitting 33 people.
