EASA task force to examine collision risk posed by drones

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has announced the creation of a new task force aimed at assessing the risk of collision between drones and aircraft. The task force will review all relevant occurrences and analyse existing studies on the issue of impact between unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and manned aircraft. It will also study the vulnerabilities of aircraft, such as windshields and engines, taking into account different categories of aircraft and their associated design and operational requirements - from large aeroplanes to general aviation to helicopters. Additionally, the task for will consider the possibility for further research in the are of drone collisions, as well as perform tests to gain a better understanding of the risks. The task force will be chaired by the EASA and include include representatives of aircraft and engine manufacturers, who will consult with the European member states and other relevant stakeholders, as well as foreign authorities. A report is expected to be published by the end of July, with plans in place for a workshop that will enable stakeholders to present and discuss its findings and recommendations.
